In the Driver Ed in a Box® materials, we talk about the importance of both attitude and behavior. But what’s more important? Attitude or behavior? That’s a question I’ve heard before. Well, they’re both important, but if you had to pick one as the most important, it would be behavior. While attitude can have a great deal of influence on your behavior, and vice versa, the behaviors of collision-free driving are what will keep you safe on the road. If you don’t have good collision-free behaviors, it doesn’t matter how good your attitude is. Also, you may have been in the car with someone who had less than kind words to say about a driver who cut them off in traffic, but if they let that driver pull away and got their space back, then even with a bad attitude, they demonstrated good behavior that can protect them on the road. Still, your attitude can affect your behaviors, which is why the Driver Ed in a Box® maintains that having the right attitude is an integral part of the training process. Your in-vehicle lessons will be much more effective if you have the right attitude. That’s a big part of why we like to end our chapters with “Practice like your life depends on it…because it does!”
