The second part of a successful lesson is Introducing the New Learning. There are a few options for this, so this part of the successful lesson is going to take more than one issue to get through.

The first one we’re going to talk about is building on the previous lesson. For example, you may have noticed how much many different ways there are to back the vehicle when we’re learning backing in the parking lot. There’s backing straight, backing at an angle, backing into a space that’s not directly behind you, etc. These maneuvers are all practiced in the parking lot without any real concern for a constricted space.

You may or may not have noticed, though, that these backing maneuvers are . There are a few options for this, so this part of the successful lesson is going to take more than one issue to get through.

You may or may not have noticed, though, that these backing maneuvers are very similar to the maneuvers you undertake when parallel parking. So, one way you can introduce a new lesson like parallel parking, is to build it on the previous lesson of backing the vehicle. You and your teen have just done oodles of practicing backing in the parking lot and you feel she’s ready to move onto the next lesson. Maybe the next day’s lesson could be on parallel parking (still in the parking lot) to build on the skills she’s just mastered.

Keep this in mind when planning your lessons. You’ll find plenty of opportunities to build a day’s lessons on the skills practiced in the previous lesson.
